But there are plenty of things that may easily surprise you.<\/p>\n<h3>Content is outrageously expensive<\/h3>\n<p>Blogging is hard.<\/p>\n<p>An article (and its author) is frequently judged by its: accuracy, storytelling ability and utility. Though anyone can put words on paper, you may have a hard time capturing a loyal audience if you can&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/blog-quality-vs-quantity-paradox\/\" target=\"_blank\">produce quality blog posts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For brands, there are two options: hiring a writer in-house OR outsourcing.<\/p>\n<p>A DIY approach is what many small businesses opt for, yet managers rarely calculate the actual cost per article. Helpdesk provider Groove recently crunched the numbers and came to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.groovehq.com\/blog\/roi-of-blog\" target=\"_blank\">the conclusion<\/a> that each of their internally produced posts costs the company $1,657.25. Talk about a lot of moolah.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I&#8217;ve known plenty of freelancers that charge anywhere between $100 &#8211; $800 an article. For more context, Scratch Magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/whopays.scratchmag.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">publishes a blog<\/a> it describes as, &#8220;A place to list which publications pay writers, and how much.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even if you find writers who&#8217;ll gladly accept $100 a post, you can easily spend $500 a week to make sure you have fresh content available for your readers each work day. Of course, that back-of-the-napkin math doesn&#8217;t yet account for the time spent managing your blog, payments for technology fees and costs associated with promoting your content.<\/p>\n<p>Oh and speaking of promoting your content&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h3>Few readers will simply <em>come<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>It is easy to believe that when you hit &#8220;publish,&#8221; a horde of readers will flock to your blog. That&#8217;s wishful thinking, at best.<\/p>\n<p>The smartest content marketers know that active promotion is key to a successful blogging strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Drive traffic to your posts through social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/successful-paid-content-marketing-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\">paid promotion<\/a>, SEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/content-distribution-syndication\/\" target=\"_blank\">content syndication<\/a>, and more. In fact, sometimes, brands benefit from taking a more <a href=\"http:\/\/thenextweb.com\/entrepreneur\/2014\/05\/13\/3-unconventional-content-marketing-strategies-try\/\" target=\"_blank\">unconventional approach to content marketing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Every content marketer has her own &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/content-marketers-reveal-secrets\/\" target=\"_blank\">secrets<\/a>&#8221; for doing X, Y or Z that generally translates into traffic and, ultimately, sales. Given that each business has different resources at its disposal (i.e. a generous marketing budget, a large social media following, a big emailing list, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/blogging-amplifies-ppc\/\" target=\"_blank\">experts in PPC advertising<\/a>, etc.), no two content strategies should ever look exactly alike if they are to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>Marketers need to customize their content playbook to better target their unique audience and acquire customers.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, everything is worth trying at least once since the results may possibly delight you.<\/p>\n<h3>The pageview is the last metric worth measuring<\/h3>\n<p>Engagement is <a href=\"http:\/\/contently.com\/strategist\/2014\/04\/22\/its-time-to-take-content-marketing-measurement-to-the-next-level\/\" target=\"_blank\">key<\/a>. Publishers ought to know readers are worth more than just a click. An active audience is one that reads your content in its entirety, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/how-to-get-people-to-share-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\">shares it with friends<\/a>, signs up for your newsletter, and even buys your product.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional publishers have, for too long a time, overemphasized the value of a pair of eyeballs. With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/timworstall\/2013\/12\/13\/over-60-of-all-website-visits-are-bot-traffic\/\" target=\"_blank\">bot traffic ruining the industry<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/better-blogging-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\">fierce competition for reader mindshare<\/a>, businesses should put greater emphasis on metrics that look beyond the standard pageview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does any of this surprise you?
