At this point, it might even be more valuable as source of pontification at conferences than it is as an ad format.&#8221; &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/pando.com\/2013\/11\/13\/native-advertising-is-trolling-us-all\/\" target=\"_blank\">Erin Griffith for PandoDaily<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Readers and publishers are vehement about the perils of &#8220;going native,&#8221; but that&#8217;s because many advertisers and publishers are doing it very, very wrong. Therefore, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2014\/feb\/25\/yahoo-opens-gemini-native-advertising\" target=\"_blank\">the skeptics are louder than ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Among those the failed experiments with native advertising are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Atlantic&#8217;s understandably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2013-01-15\/the-atlantic-the-church-of-scientology-and-the-perils-of-native-advertising\" target=\"_blank\">controversial piece<\/a> supporting the Church of Scientology. Enough said.<\/li>\n<li>Adweek BrandShare&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brandshare\/so-you-want-build-awesome-team-content-marketers-156499\" target=\"_blank\">collaboration with NewsCred<\/a>. Content experts and marketers Eric Wittlake and Chris Boyles had some choice words to say about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>A not awesome &#8220;Sponsored&#8221; article on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Adweek\">@adweek<\/a> about creating awesome content. <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/GvoedbfNMY\">http:\/\/t.co\/GvoedbfNMY<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23IFearTheFuture&amp;src=hash\">#IFearTheFuture<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eric Wittlake (@wittlake) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wittlake\/statuses\/448882578955964416\">March 26, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" data-conversation=\"none\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dannywong1190\">@dannywong1190<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wittlake\">@wittlake<\/a> Yuck. Any article that abruptly ends with a link &#8216;for more&#8217; is bad. Especially when it had nothing to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chris Boyles (@chrsboyls) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrsboyls\/statuses\/451357530132717568\">April 2, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\"><\/script>Select advertisers and publishers are giving native advertising a bad rep. But neither party can entirely be blamed for this.<\/p>\n<p>Their needs are in constant conflict. Advertisers want a front page feature in the New York Times (with a full spread on pages 2 and 3). Publishers want to maintain their credibility and integrity. What ultimately happens is both parties push back on each other until one side caves and lets the other have its way. In the case of Adweek and NewsCred, NewsCred was the clear winner, but only short-term. Long-term, neither party is coming out on top with this specific campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, it&#8217;s not a major setback though, rather, <strong>a failed experiment<\/strong>. The two decided to break<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0modern conventions about direct promotion in native advertising and develop a direct response campaign which drives readers to submit their name, work email, website URL, and company name in exchange for a free e-book crafted by NewsCred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My tone reveals I&#8217;m skeptical about the efficacy of the campaign. At the same time, I trust everyone&#8217;s still &#8220;figuring it out&#8221; and can&#8217;t fully be at fault for &#8220;trying something different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/old-school-native-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\">sponsored content is nothing new<\/a>. Years ago, the Microsoft BizSpark program sponsored the <a href=\"http:\/\/readwrite.com\/tag\/start#awesm=~oAuPa1zJJfILds\" target=\"_blank\">ReadWriteStart channel<\/a> (on ReadWriteWeb) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/category\/bizspark\/\" target=\"_blank\">Spark of Genius Series<\/a> (on Mashable). Even before that, businesses were paying journalists and bloggers for paid reviews of product.<\/p>\n<p>But all of that was relatively small scale compared to what&#8217;s coming. eMarketer <a href=\"http:\/\/marketingland.com\/73-of-online-publishers-offer-native-advertising-just-10-still-sitting-on-the-sidelines-emarketer-52506\" target=\"_blank\">estimates<\/a> native ad spend will grow to $4.57 billion by 2017. What&#8217;s more is that the internet has revolutionized digital publishing, increasing both the supply and demand for news by orders by magnitude.<\/p>\n<p>Forbes is one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/digiday.com\/publishers\/a-look-inside-publishers-content-studios\/\" target=\"_blank\">few digital publishers<\/a> to have scaled its Brand Newsroom. Publishing through the BrandVoice platform, businesses either pay-per-post or pay a monthly license fee to have free reign to push content they know their audience will be enthusiastic about.<\/p>\n<p>The real question on everyone&#8217;s mind is: <strong>Does it work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A surprising\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/b2bdigital.net\/2013\/09\/19\/b2b-native-advertising-brandvoice\/\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> by Eric Wittlake shows\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">BrandVoice by Forbes doesn&#8217;t actually drive pageviews. <\/span>Buzzfeed, on the other hand, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/download\/casestudies\" target=\"_blank\">plenty of success stories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is clear\u00a0the jury is still out.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18110\" alt=\"native-advertising\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/native-advertising.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Though the future of publishing is uncertain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/native-advertising-outperforms\/\" target=\"_blank\">the variety of success story<\/a> makes me hopeful and bullish on native advertising. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Inviting native ads to be a permanent part of the overall publishing equation will absolutely help the antiquated industry grow and thrive. When done well, marketers and publishers win big time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Marketers get in front of audiences they want to reach with stories those readers actually care about. Publishers drive more revenue without compromising their brand or integrity. Readers discover outstanding media created just for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over the next few years, publishers will have to tread carefully when utilizing native advertising so they may keep their hard-earned readers<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">.
