My clients are awesome and &#8212; fingers crossed &#8212; I don&#8217;t expect to run into a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makealivingwriting.com\/save-your-sanity-with-nightmare-freelance-clients\/\">nightmare client<\/a> anytime soon. But in order for a content team to be successful, managers need to learn how to effectively work with their writers (<a href=\"http:\/\/mozy.com\/blog\/small-business-tips\/how-clients-and-contractors-can-succeed-together-in-a-freelance-world\/\">freelance<\/a>, in-house or otherwise).<\/p>\n<p>We queried founders of successful startups and members of\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/yec.co\/\" target=\"_blank\">Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC)<\/a>,\u00a0an invite-only organization comprised of the world\u2019s most promising young entrepreneurs,\u00a0for their best piece of advice for the following question:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Q. What&#8217;s one great tip for communicating abstract requirements (like tone or voice) to the person creating your company&#8217;s content?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Edwin-Armstrong-at-blackboard1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-16225\" title=\"Provide examples for your content team and writers\" alt=\"Provide examples for your content team and writers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Edwin-Armstrong-at-blackboard1.png\" width=\"560\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Edwin-Armstrong-at-blackboard1-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Edwin-Armstrong-at-blackboard1-400x215.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>1. Provide Examples<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;When communicating subtle and abstract things such as tone of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/understanding-what-blogging-voice-is\/\">voice<\/a>, words aren&#8217;t adequate,&#8221; tells\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/heydustinlee\">Dustin Lee<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theplaybook.co\">Playbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lee continues, &#8220;This is because the definition of words like innovative, cheeky and trustworthy vary greatly depending on who you&#8217;re talking to. Instead of trying to describe it, give examples. Find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/great-startup-blogs\/\">two to three other brands<\/a> that have achieved the tone you&#8217;re striving for, and share it with staff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>2. Explain Why<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpiralStair\">Sam Saxton<\/a>\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salterspiralstair.com\">Salter Stairs<\/a>\u00a0knows, &#8220;Adjectives are great, but every preference should have a purpose. Take the time to analyze why you like something before you ask your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/boston-content-marketing-agency\/\">vendor<\/a> to emulate it. They\u2019ll better understand your goals and have more input for suggesting further innovation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>3. Create a &#8220;Swipe File&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/thursdayb\">Thursday Bram<\/a>, principal\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypermodernconsulting.com\">Hyper Modern Consulting<\/a>,\u00a0recommends,\u00a0&#8220;As you read content produced by other companies, bookmark or save anything that resonates with you &#8212; swipe it for your own use.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Make sure to tag anything that fits what you have in mind for those abstract requirements, such as tone. Then, when you&#8217;re working with a content creator, you have plenty of examples to share and your requirements aren&#8217;t nearly so abstract.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>5. Use Audio Notes<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, some words are simply better spoken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we need to communicate nuanced things such as tone or voice, we send audio notes (specifically through Evernote) but there are numerous other ways,&#8221; says <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/leahtn\">Leah Neaderthal<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startsomewhere.com\">Start Somewhere<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;It provides a much richer experience because our designers can hear our voice, the emotion behind our words and those intangible things that are hard to communicate over email.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>6. Hire People Who Know What Those Words Mean<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/MESlayter\">Mary Ellen Slayter<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/repcapitalmedia.com\/\">Reputation Capital<\/a>\u00a0believes,\u00a0&#8220;Tone and voice aren&#8217;t abstract concepts to professional editors and writers. If you weren&#8217;t a literature major yourself, you can still communicate what you&#8217;re looking for by getting concrete.\u00a0Start with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/use-buyer-personas-within-marketing\/\">buyer personas<\/a>: Who are they? What are their challenges? Share specific examples of publications they are likely to read. Explain How You Want to Make People Feel<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;A creative person tends to be imaginative, so if you paint the right picture for him, he&#8217;ll typically understand the tone or voice that you&#8217;d like to use,&#8221; notes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/andykaruza\">Andy Karuza<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kinivo.com\">Brandbuddee<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;To do this, I explain how I want to make the reader or viewer feel when interacting with the content.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>8. Iterate With Feedback<\/h3>\n<p>Nurture your writers. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Twitter.com\/DoreenBloch\">Doreen Bloch<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.Poshly.com\">Poshly Inc.<\/a>\u00a0is a strong advocate of an iterative approach which allows you to also mentor your team members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When creating company content, it&#8217;s likely you&#8217;ll need to review text <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/how-to-use-images-on-your-blog\/\">and images<\/a> a few times before publishing them. Instead of just providing corrections, make sure you explain why a certain edit was given so the content creator can refine her work over time. It&#8217;s unusual for a content creator to get the abstract elements of content perfect on day one, so be comfortable giving feedback.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s your best tip for managing a content team?
