This year, more businesses than ever will output <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/digitalnext\/world-branded-content-original-wins\/239269\/\">original pieces<\/a>\u00a0that will surprise and satisfy readers around the web.<\/p>\n<p>To help you craft content readers will care about, here is a list of things you <em><strong>should<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0do before you hit &#8216;publish&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Better yet, copy the main points, paste them onto a word doc, and print them out as a checklist to reference when writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/blogging-by-The-Shopping-Sherpa.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15619 aligncenter\" title=\"blogging by The Shopping Sherpa\" alt=\"blogging by The Shopping Sherpa\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/blogging-by-The-Shopping-Sherpa.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>1. Be Ruthlessly Selfless<\/h3>\n<p>Although this goes without saying, we have to drill it into your head just to be sure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Take \u2018yourself\u2019 out of the equation. Be 100% impartial and put the reader&#8217;s interest first,&#8221; advises Mark Rushworth, Head of Search at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluelogic.co.uk\/web-services\">Blue Logic Web<\/a>, a digital agency.\u00a0&#8220;This will deliver more traction in the long run.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We can&#8217;t help but be selfish; it&#8217;s in our nature. \u00a0Admittedly, I am no exception &#8212; I&#8217;m frequently caught eating the last bag of chips (<em>please don&#8217;t\u00a0chastise\u00a0me<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, your readers are not always concerned about you, your business or blog. Rather, they arrived to your content assuming it would offer them something of value in exchange for their time.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.websolvers.com\/blog\/author\/mcerto\">Matt Certo<\/a>,\u00a0Principal of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.websolvers.com\/\">WebSolvers, Inc<\/a>. recommends you &#8220;write and promote [your content] to the selfish nature of your audience. Our digital culture has conditioned us to expect answers to our questions that are fast and free. What\u2019s more, consumers don\u2019t want to be &#8216;sold,&#8217; they want to connect with brands. [Content] should focus on the consumer\u2014not the brand. If your audience profiling is specific and your content and distribution is reflective of those findings, you are well on your way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>2. Go Evergreen<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15620\" title=\"evergreen content by dungodung\" alt=\"evergreen content by dungodung\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/evergreen-by-dungodung.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rushworth also encourages writers to produce evergreen content because &#8220;[it] will gain traction year on year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As you develop a large stock of\u00a0high quality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-traffic-to-website\/\">evergreen content<\/a>, your traffic numbers, ideally, should grow. Posts that deliver value are rewarded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/how-to-optimize-your-blog-posts-for-seo\/\">search engines<\/a> which slowly funnel\u00a0more and more qualified readers to your site over time. Furthermore, people will continue to reference your articles months &#8212; even years &#8212; from the original post date.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Create Headlines That Promote Themselves<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15621\" title=\"Upworthy Generator\" alt=\"Upworthy Generator\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/upworthy-generator.png\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/a-scientific-guide-to-writing-great-headlines-on-twitter-facebook-and-your-blog\">Exceptional headlines<\/a> garner clicks, are easy to remember and are especially shareworthy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The headline of your blog\u00a0post, video, etc. will (more often than not) determine whether your post\u00a0goes viral. Be ambiguous, leave the reader wanting more. Maybe tease them\u00a0with a question. Remember, the job of the headline is to get the reader to\u00a0view the content,&#8221; shares Dan Scalco of <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalux.co\">Digitalux<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Upworthy, one of modern day&#8217;s most impressive traffic-generating monsters, writes more than 25 headlines for each post it publishes before settling on one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; and in case you needed a bit of inspiration, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/10-kinds-of-shareable-headlines-to-try-on-your-blog\/\">here are<\/a> 10 headlines you may want to experiment with.<\/p>\n<h3>4. This not only helps develop loyalty and trust, it also boosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/how-to-get-people-to-share-social-media\/\">social sharing<\/a> and drives business results.<\/p>\n<p>Kurt Elster, MBA and Creative Director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ethercycle.com\/\">Ether Cycle<\/a>\u00a0knows,\u00a0&#8220;If something is compelling enough, people will share it. You can&#8217;t force people to share crappy content.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Conner Galway, Social Media Director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.junctioncs.com\/\">Junction Creative<\/a>, only produces content that\u00a0&#8220;has been\u00a0created in a way [to be] useful\/funny\/interesting\/valuable to the target\u00a0segment that it will be going out to. Anything that we do to advertise or\u00a0seed the content to a group is just lighting a match &#8211; great content is\u00a0what makes it catch fire and really gets us the results that we&#8217;re hoping\u00a0for.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>5. You may have already developed a basic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/use-buyer-personas-within-marketing\/\">persona<\/a>\u00a0for said audience. But one of the harder things to do as a marketer is effectively targeting your best readers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JHTScherck\">John-Henry Scherck<\/a>, Content Marketing Manager for <a href=\"http:\/\/seogadget.com\/\">SEOgadget<\/a>, shares his firm&#8217;s ingenious method. &#8220;We pinpoint influencers that follow\u00a0competitors, download all of their tweets and determine what URLs they are\u00a0sharing on Twitter &#8211; that&#8217;s where we target our content. (Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/how-to-use-twitter-data-for-really-targeted-outreach\">whole\u00a0process<\/a>).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another important thing you should do is &#8220;take time to consider your best business prospect and\u00a0then use social platforms, blogs and online publications to read comments\u00a0and *listen* to what they have to say,&#8221;\u00a0encourages Andrea Nelson De La Cerda, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thecloveragency.com\/\">The Clover Agency<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;They may give some clues about what\u00a0their biggest needs are when it comes to information and promotions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>6. &#8230; and Find Out Where They Live<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15624\" title=\"map by Manitoba Historical Maps\" alt=\"map by Manitoba Historical Maps\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/map-by-Manitoba-Historical-Maps.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/map-by-Manitoba-Historical-Maps.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/map-by-Manitoba-Historical-Maps-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/map-by-Manitoba-Historical-Maps-400x250.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Figuratively, anyways.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Go to where your audience is &#8211; use [those] social media channels to push your content, and allow your customers to engage with it,&#8221; suggests Erin Cushing,\u00a0Content Strategist at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insegment.com\/ \">inSegment, Inc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, discover where your readers congregate and then deliver the content they need in a timely manner so you develop stronger relationships with your customers and remain top-of-mind.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Include Others In Your Content<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15625\" title=\"teamwork by dearbarbie\" alt=\"teamwork by dearbarbie\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/teamwork-by-dearbarbie.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Like what I&#8217;ve done here, bloggers should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/3-types-of-content-that-are-super-shareworthy\/\">reference industry experts<\/a>\u00a0who will appreciate being quoted or mentioned in your stories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best way to motivate others to share your content, is to include them in the content and engage them in it,&#8221; says\u00a0Certo (of WebSolvers).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One way we have found success is to write book reviews. When the authors of the books are engaged, they are often happy to share the content via retweet or a blog link\/comment. In cases where those authors have large social media followings, the results can be profound. We did this recently with an author team that has a combined Twitter following over nearly 400,000 users.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The book review received ~250 unique visitors from the tweets. Imagine the possibilities if you reference many more influencers and turn them into regular brand advocates.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Channel Your Inner Creative<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15626\" title=\"inner creative drawing by epSos.de\" alt=\"inner creative drawing by epSos.de\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/inner-creative-drawing-by-epSos.de_.jpg\" width=\"550\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/inner-creative-drawing-by-epSos.de_.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/inner-creative-drawing-by-epSos.de_-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/inner-creative-drawing-by-epSos.de_-400x220.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Toss out all of the formal language that puts barriers between your readers and you.<\/p>\n<p><em>Be a real person.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it\u2019s a brand\u2019s duty to act as an individual, especially when it comes to creating and sharing content. Developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/how-to-develop-blogging-voice\/\">unique voice<\/a> and tone is the starting place, and one of the main areas we focus on when advising a new client. Your brand should have a persona behind it; something that makes people inherently want to &#8216;care and share,&#8217; &#8221; believes Kerrie LeBourveau-Smith, Group Digital Director of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/studiogood.com\/\">StudioGood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What\u2019s fun for us marketers is that nothing is set in stone \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/understanding-what-blogging-voice-is\/\">your voice<\/a> can and should be a work in progress \u2013 as you gather new insights, as the seasons come and go, new campaigns come into market, etc. The more you can own your voice, continuously perfecting it, the more likely you are to pave a path people will want to follow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>9. Speed Kills (the competition)<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15627\" title=\"tortoise and hare by DannonL\" alt=\"tortoise and hare by DannonL\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/tortoise-and-hare-by-DannonL.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/tortoise-and-hare-by-DannonL.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/tortoise-and-hare-by-DannonL-300x162.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/tortoise-and-hare-by-DannonL-400x216.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not everyone has the resources to operate like a newsroom &#8212; constantly aware and eternally ready to jump at the latest news. Fortunately, you don&#8217;t have to be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a heightened expectation for brands to respond quickly, strategically and creatively to pop culture moments, breaking news, or just to what fans are saying (good or bad) about their brand. Not every brand can have a social media war room or be an \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/02\/04\/oreos-super-bowl-tweet-dunk-dark_n_2615333.html\">Oreo<\/a>,\u201d but they should have a solid plan in place for observing and reacting to what\u2019s happening in the world,&#8221;\u00a0says\u00a0LeBourveau-Smith.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we see happening now is that some brands are responding <em>too<\/em> quickly. A recent example is the Royal Baby &#8212; nearly every brand had a witty post in place, but the collective response from the internet was not so welcoming. A tumblr blog called <a href=\"http:\/\/royallydesperate.tumblr.com\/\">Royally Desperate<\/a> popped up, poking fun at brands\u2019 desperate ploys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, there&#8217;s no real pressure for you to be the *first* to react to breaking developments. A bit of self-restraint and prudence will help you avoid receiving a serious social media shaming.<\/p>\n<p>LeBourveau-Smith also warns,\u00a0&#8220;Be cautious about being the first one out of the gate \u2013 you could end up on the other side of the fence. Being astute to the content competitors publish (and how people are reacting to it) will make you a better content creator. You may be late to the game, but at least you\u2019ll be playing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>10. Make It Pop (visually)<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15628\" title=\"optical illusion by alice313\" alt=\"optical illusion by alice313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/optical-illusion-by-alice313.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is another obvious point (like #1) that still needs to be mentioned, especially if you plan to use these points as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-blog-checklist\/\">checklist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Deanna Ayres, Search Engine Marketing Strategist\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketingzen.com\/\">Marketing Zen<\/a>, recommends you &#8220;add a visual element that relates to the content,&#8221; whether that be an image, infographic, video or Vine, make sure it is as compelling as the words coming before and after it.<\/p>\n<p>The visual web is a <a href=\"http:\/\/readwrite.com\/2013\/10\/24\/pinterest-tumblr-instagram-visual-web#awesm=~otEatHucwwYbZF\">billion dollar trend<\/a>\u00a0that will only continue to grow. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixlee.com\/blog\/user-photos-drive-business-decisions\/\">Users love images<\/a>. Make sure you&#8217;re giving them what they want.<\/p>\n<h3>11.\u00a0Caring is Sharing<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15629\" title=\"sharing by bengrey\" alt=\"sharing by bengrey\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shareaholic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/sharing-by-bengrey.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What a fitting way to end this list.<\/p>\n<p>Before your readers can care about you, you must first genuinely care about them.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this requires on-going research.<\/p>\n<p>At Social Good, LeBourveau-Smith says,\u00a0&#8220;[the] community management team is constantly on the hunt for trends on a micro and macro level. That means digging through the weeds of Reddit and StumbleUpon, the popular section of Pinterest, Twitter chats, forums and so on and so forth.
